It’s becoming harder to distinguish what has been written, said or created by a real person and what by AI. If it was a real person, what was the intention behind it? Could the article be written or the video be made, to entice us into buying a new product or to obtain our data? Meeting in person means looking into the eyes of those we communicate with and having real experience in real time. And even if it means being more vulnerable or slightly uncomfortable compared to sitting behind the laptop, it also means we are being authentic . The conversation is real, and we can react to verbal and non-verbal clues and adjust to each other. Therefore, ScreenFreeMind™ workshops are only available face-to-face.
The information we find online is often repetitive (when people and AI reproduce what is already available on the web) and taken out of context. It is rarely checked for accuracy and referenced.
It’s important to me to use reliable resources. I obtain information mainly from books (one of my favourites is The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, by Professor Shoshana Zuboff), regularly visit conferences and talks (recently for example An Ed-Tech tragedy? Technology, crisis and future of education, delivered by Mark West from UNESCO at the University of Cambridge). I listen to interviews and speak with real people face to face. It’s not that I wouldn't use the internet at all. I follow some people, Dr. Jonathan Haidt being one of them, but not too many.
I use these to create and deliver Screen Free Mind workshops to my customers.
It’s crucial for me that my work results in actions, that will enhance peoples’ lives.
There is a difference between knowing and acting on that knowledge. Most of us know that too much screen time is not good for us, but we often feel unable to do something about it. I help to cross that bridge so my customers are not only well informed but also leave the workshop with a realistic plan of action created by themselves that suits their specific needs and situations.
